Yoga for dummies

So yesterday I did something new, something exciting (for me) and I just had to share my experience with you all. I, Niecole Smit, started yoga...

For those of you who don't know me, well I'm 1.77m tall and I'm a little over weight so I'm not the perfect candidate for posing like "the eagle" or crouching like "the toad" so it was a bit hard. Another point you all should remember is that I don't like exercise, I do it for about an hour and then I'm done! But now I got myself a gym buddy, and we decided to check out the yoga scene.

Firstly we got there a bit late... so we sneaked in and grabbed some mats, while the others were all breathing slowly and doing some kind of pose. Took of shoes and jumped straight into position.
The first part went great, we had to bend forward and lift our legs...

Then came the hard part, and it looked even harder because of course most of the people there could do it! You lay on your back, then you swing your legs up in the air and hold them straight (first stumbling block, my legs don't go straight, they go into the shape of a C). then you thrust your legs upwards to the sky and hold your back (easy, I could do that, it seemed that the higher I thrusted my legs upwards the straighter they got). Then you swing you legs gently over your head! (Hear is where I just couldn't go on, the other people were so flexible it anoid the crap out of me! I couldn't get my legs over my head, I was really afraid I might break my neck!) Then you drop your feet to the ground and stretch your legs along your sides. This position looked really simple all these times I've watched these Yoga darlings posing through the window, but it was dam hard! I didn't attempt to do it at all, like I said, I was mortally afraid that I might break something.

Luckily here it ended and we had to lay down again and breath (which was much easier).
All in all a great experience and I am happy to say that I am going to try it out again!
Monday there's a Zumba class, so I'll let you know how that one goes!

If you're an avid yoga participant, why don't you tell me about it? Got some tips? Share! Please?
Or if you're like me, and your first experience left you a bit stiff and sore, well tell me about that too! No reason for us to suffer alone right?

Cool, glad you got to try yoga out!

I haven't been to a yoga class since I got back, I'm ashamed to say. So far, I don't have too much of a problem getting into the positions (like the one with your legs over your head), but I have trouble with those that require standing on one leg (guess I'm off balance!). I also can't put my head on my knees when my legs are stretched out in front of me. But hey, I suppose that all comes with practice :)

I love yoga! It slows me down and makes me love all the things I find imperfect about myself and learn to love them :) The poses take time and patience. But if you do often you will def. see improvement in your posture and learn to listen to your body!!

I can't do plow, either. I'd say only about half of the class I am in can. My instructors says that if at anytime while bringing your legs down above your head you feel pressure in your back or neck, bring your knees towards you face. It definitely helps.

Good for you! I've tried doing both yoga and pilates but I'm someone who needs to get into a routine and I just can't seem to fit it into my regular routine. Maybe in the new year though!
