Interschools in Paarl

Its that time of the year again, when Paarl Gymnasium and Paarl Boys High meet each other on the field.

But Rugby is not the only thing involved, there is also Netball, Hockey, Chess, golf, swimming etc.

But to most of us and maybe to most of you, the most important thing is the rugby taking place tomorrow 31 July 2010, when there’ll be a major clash between the two under 19A teams of both schools respectfully.

If you live in Paarl you might know what hype happens around this time, but if you don’t, then let me tell you. In the streets each schools banners are put up, everywhere you can think of, inside shops, on lamp posts, tree’s and even restaurants have Interschools specials… so do shops. The local newspaper (Paarl Post) is full of supporting messages from businesses to both schools. The place literary goes crazy around this time.

The old boys (people who are alumni of each school) go way out to. There are banners on cars, painted faces, and if you’re friends with someone of the opposing school, well for this period each year, you are not such close friends anymore. Recently both schools have even manufactured the mirror socks in their colors!

This event is a historical one, and dates back to the early 20th century. The schools are affectionately known as The Galpille (Boys High) and the Bloed Worse (Gym). The names came from the early blazers the schools use to wear. Boys High use to wear White and Gym use to wear Red. Its also said to be the BIGGEST school boy rugby event in the WORLD!

I wish both schools good luck, as an Old boy from Paarl Gymnasium I’ll be rooting for my school of course. Just want to ad that everyone should be safe and enjoy the rugby!
